Summertime is a great time to expose kids to some things that are new and different. School is out, most activities are over and many of us are looking for fun and educational opportunities for our kids. I worked with my Girl Scouts and the Food Bank this spring on some volunteer projects and was happy to see this one being offered this summer. It’s located right here in Westchester (Valhalla) with afternoon sessions to accommodate kids who go to day camp.
I love working with the Food Bank for many reasons but mainly because of the need that exists in Westchester. Westchester Magazine ran this article in 2016 and it stuck with me. 1 in 5 residents go hungry in this suburban, affluent county in which we live. This shocking statistic gave me the push I needed to get my daughter and her friends involved with the Food Bank. This spring, the girls packed bags of groceries for families of preschool children in need, made sandwiches for the hungry in NYC and served local residents at a soup kitchen in White Plains.
